Another Pet Food Recall! How can you pick the best foods for your companion?

Puma and Bagheera ©Rose De Dan www.reikishamanic.comNatura Pet Foods has issued a recall on some of its dry food products which may have been contaminated with salmonella. At least 20 products for dogs, cats and ferrets are involved. Affected brands include California Natural, EVO, HealthWise, and Innova.

The recall has now been confirmed by the FDA in a news release dated March 18, 2013 which contains a complete list of the products affected with UPC code, lot numbers and what to do if you have one.

I have not recommended ANY of Natura’s foods to my clients since they were purchased in 2010 by Proctor and Gamble (see Blindsided: Farewell Natura Pet Foods, Hello Corporate Bottom Line? for my reasons why).

With so many recalls affecting major manufacturers how do you choose a quality food?

Generally speaking you want to avoid giant conglomerates such as P&G and stick with companies whose entire focus is on pet food. Quality of ingredients is usually much higher and so is quality control for possible contaminants.

One way to bypass the corporate giants is to avoid purchasing commercial foods from supermarkets, large pet store chains, or “box” stores. Instead, seek out so-called small “pet boutiques.” These usually focus on human grade quality foods that do not contain grains such as corn or wheat (which do not belong in the diet of any carnivore) and whose protein sources are of a higher quality.

The best way to locate such a store is to visit the website of a high-quality food such as Taste of the Wild and use their zip code search to find the store closest to you that carries their brand. Chances are very good that the store will also be carrying other quality foods as well.

However, due diligence is required. Some stores do the homework for you, staying on top of the latest news and only carrying foods that offer your companion the very best nutritional support for a happy, healthy life, while the standards of others are more relaxed.

Here are links to two articles written by West Seattle veterinary acupuncturist Lena McCullough that can help you make the healthiest choices for your animal companion and that offer guidance for how to make the switch.

Iams and Eukanuba Recall Dry Dog and Cat Foods Due to Possible Salmonella

August 14, 2013 – P&G is announcing a voluntary recall of select Iams dry cat & dog food and Eukanuba dry dog food products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

What:  The affected dog and cat foods include the lot and UPC codes listed in the table below.

The lot codes can be found on the bags according to the diagrams below.

Why: Internal P&G testing determined that some product lots produced on this line have the potential for Salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made during this timeframe on this specific manufacturing line.

Threat Level: Medium. There have been no reports of pet or human illness associated with these products, yet Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

What Should I Do?:

  • Dispose of any unused portion of the product and feed your pet an alternate food. Keep on the lookout for signs of Salmonella.

  • If your PetCareRx purchase was affected, please call Eukanuba at 800-423-6036  or Iams at 800-675-3849 for information on refunds.

  • You can also contact P&G toll-free at 800-208-0172 (Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM ET) with any questions or concerns.

Alternatives: If your pet eats another type of food in addition to one mentioned above, feed your pet the other food only. If you need to switch your pet to a new food, consider one of these options.

Since switching a pet’s food quickly (instead of mixing foods over a period of a few days) can cause stomach distress, talk to your vet if your pet experiences digestive issues.

Food Recall

Food Recall

Food Concerns…

Who needs them anytime but all the more so at Christmas…

A couple of days ago we received notice that there is a recall of Kroger’s Dog Food…

Click Here to Read about the Recall!

There have been many pet food recalls in the last decade. Many top brand names have been involved in these recalls. This time it is a store-brand food.  Since most stores don’t make their own foods we were doing some research to try to figure out who makes this food for Kroger.  We could not determine the answer to that question.

Regardless, knowing that many of you depend upon us to keep you informed we wanted to bring this recall to your attention. Having done so we want to mention that a quality food is important. With so many dog foods being made by large companies such as Mars Candy Company and Nestle.  In fact here is a list we found on the Internet:

Who owns what? Corporation & Pet Foods:

Nestle: Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, Purina One

Heinz: 9 Lives, Amore, Gravy Train, Kibbles-n-Bits, Nature’s Recipe

Colgate-Palmolive: Hill’s Science Diet

Proctor & Gamble: Eukanuba and Iams

Mars: Kal Kan, Mealtime, Pedigree, Sheba, Waltham’s

Many of these well known brands were once considered the best food available. Some of you may still feed them. This list might be outdated as Mars has also acquired Nutro Natural and there are many blogs and forum discussions on the decline in quality.

Understanding dog food and balancing the information is hard for the average person. Many people just pick up their food at their Veterinary office–most of which rely on Science Diet, Hills, and on occasion Purina. We understand that Purina is now owned by Nestle.

Our long time favorite was Eagle Pack because they had excellent quality control and manufactured all their own food. In the last couple of years they sold out to Wellness who changed the Eagle Pack product line to Holistic Select. We have stuck with the brand because by all appearances they have kept the same level of quality or made improvements.

Not every dog or even every Weimaraner will do well on the same food. For this reason, you might need to change their food at some point in time. Changing food is precarious at best. Holistic Transitions is still sold under the Eagle Pack label and is designed to help you change dog food.  It is not very costly and worth every penny.  It is available online and at some pet stores. Another similar product is Holistic Solutions which is an all natural diarrhea treatment.

The Holistic Transitions works to help you transition your pet’s food. Even with the best of directions it can be tough to easily transition. Suggestions include the mixing of the old food and the new food starting with a 50-50 mix of the two foods. Then over a period of two weeks you slowly reduce the old food and increase the new food.

We find the Weimaraner often will pick one of the two foods out and leave the other. Food changes can bring on diarrhea and sometimes severe diarrhea. Transitions can help ease or possibly prevent these issues entirely.

Quality food

…is important for your Weimaraner…..

Choosing a premium food is not all that easy. If you go with a store brand you need to be extra vigilant even once you determine it is a premium food. Stores don’t usually manufacture their own dog food though the package carries their brand. At any time they can change manufacturers, ingredients, and quality without notice. Costco has had a fairly good food but they are an example of one you would want to watch. There is no guarantee they will stick with the same company next month.

Ingredients…

Ingredients should not include corn, wheat, or barley, nor should it have a lot of fillers. Surprisingly, protein meal (such as lamb meal or chicken meal) is more digestible than those foods touting whole chicken or whole lamb etc.  A person has to read the labels as with their own food and determine if the food is quality, appropriate and the right proportions. As a general rule an adult Weimaraner should do well on a food having about 22% protein and 12% fat. (You may not find any with these exact proportions but you should have something within a couple percentages.) In truth, the ingredients are more important than the percentages.

Serving Size

If you are working or hunting your Weimaraner you may need higher percentages of protein and fat in order to maintain a healthy body weight. During the winter they may require a slightly larger serving to retain their body weight. Proportions vary according to size, sex, amount of exercise, and season. Pregnant or lactating moms also require a lot more feed and higher calorie food. Here at OwyheeStar Cliff feeds between 3-5 cups normally. All of the kids get at least 3 cups even in the spring or summer. In the winter the minimum serving is 4 cups. A few require almost 6 cups to maintain their body weight in the winter. As you can see this is not an exact science.

Much of this is subjective. You have to determine if they are fat enough as well as not too fat. If their backbone is showing they are getting too thin. The backbone should have a thin coating of fat.

Food issues can be a problem. Some Weims have a sensitive tummy and cannot tolerate the normal foods and for this reason require a special diet. (Special diets might mean using duck and potato, salmon, or other foods that contain sweet potato). Food changes as we said are precarious at best. We hope this information helps you understand a bit more about the dog food industry. It is ever changing and out-sourcing our pet’s food is happening. Our best advice is to be vigilant.

RECALL: Diamond Pet Food expands recall; Chicken Soup for Pet Lovers Soul - Poisoned Pets

dog food bowl baby eating kibble gross salmonella pathogens bacteria contaminationdog food bowl baby eating kibble gross sepia

Salmonella concerns prompted Missouri-based Diamond Pet Foods to recall a second batch of dry dog food produced at a South Carolina plant where production has been suspended, the company announced Thursday.

Production was suspended April 8 at the Gaston, South Carolina plant after a recall two days earlier involving a different product, Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food. A cat food recall at the plant in 2009 was prompted because the food didn’t contain enough thiamine, an essential nutrient for cats.

The plant in Gaston, South Carolina, is the same one that made mold-contaminated food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide in 2005.

A statement from the company said the recall includes one production run of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food distributed over 10 states.

The latest recall covers the following production codes:

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula

35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 27/JAN/2013, CLF0102B32XWR 28/JAN/2013 CLF0102B31XCW 28/JAN/2013

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula

6 lb. CLF0102B3XALW 28/JAN/2013

The product was distributed to customers in Ohio, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Speculation as to whether other brands manufactured at the South Carolina plant might be affected, remains unknown.

Diamond manufactures brands such as Solid Gold, Canidae/Felidae, Nature’s Balance, Kirkland, Taste of the Wild, and 4-Health.

It is important to remember that pets can also be carriers of Salmonella, even if they are not exhibiting signs of illness, and they can still infect other animals or humans.

An infection can occur by putting objects or fingers that have touched a contaminated product, such as pet food, into the mouth or by touching a pet or in extreme cases, a person, that is infected.

If left untreated, pets may also become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and may vomit. If your pet is showing any of those signs, call your veterinarian.
Pet owners, who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods at 800-442-0402, or by visiting Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul.

Iams, Eukanuba dogs foods included in P&G pet food recall

Proctor and Gamble (P&G) has expanded a pet food recall to include specialty dry dog foods sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands sold in veterinary clinics and pet retailers. The dog foods have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

The following dry pet food products are included:

Last week, P&G recalled several brands of cat food, including Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs. You can learn more about that on the FDA recall website.

From the most recent press release:

“Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

“Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”
