Natura Pet Recalls Four Brands Of Cat And Dog Foods For Possible Salmonella Contamination

It seems like only a week ago that we last shared with you the news of a pet food recall––because it was. This week, a kibble sample from Natura Pet turned up with salmonella bacteria, and the company has recalled a wide variety of cat and dog kibbles sold under the California Natural, Evo, Healthwise, and Innova brand names.

Random testing performed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture turned up contaminated food at a retailer, and the company is voluntarily recalling all food produced during the same period in order to make sure no one gets sick.

Salmonella contamination in kibble is particularly dangerous because most pet owners don’t think about cross-contamination when serving up a bowl. It’s a good idea to wash pet food bowls regularly, and especially to wash your hands after handling pet foods, even in kibble form.

In humans, the early symptoms of salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Affected pets may have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. The infection can turn fatal in all species, and you should seek medical attention if you or your pet show any of these symptoms.

Consumers with questions should call Natura at (800) 224-6123 or consult the company’s recall site.

Salmonella in dog food a risk to humans

Merrick’s Texas Hold ‘Ems Beef Filet Squares is one of several pet foods voluntarily recalled this year for possible salmonella contamination.

The Associated Press reports today that a government report published online Monday by the medical journal Pediatrics has detailed the first salmonella outbreak in humans linked to contaminated dog food.

Between 2006 and 2008, an outbreak of salmonella ”sickened 79 people in 21 mostly eastern states … Almost half of the victims were children aged 2 and younger.”

According to the AP story, “The outbreak was blamed on salmonella bacteria found in several brands of dry dog and cat food produced at a Mars Petcare US plant in Everson, Pa., including Pedigree and Special Kitty.” It’s thought that small children touch the contaminated dog food dishes and then put their hands in their mouths, thereby picking up the salmonella.

There have been six unrelated recalls of pet food this year due to possible salmonella contamination.  However in the story, Duane Ekedahl, president of the Pet Food Institute, a manufacturers’ trade group, explained that consumers should not be worried about pet food as a souce of contamination. “Companies are very vigilant and in rare occasions when it occurs, products are pulled off the market,” he said.

To reduce infection risks at home, the authors of the report recommend washing hands after handling pets and pet food; washing pet food bowls and feeding areas; and keeping children under 5 years old away from pet feeding areas and places where pet food bowls are washed.

Iams and Eukanuba Recall Dry Dog and Cat Foods Due to Possible Salmonella

August 14, 2013 – P&G is announcing a voluntary recall of select Iams dry cat & dog food and Eukanuba dry dog food products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

What:  The affected dog and cat foods include the lot and UPC codes listed in the table below.

The lot codes can be found on the bags according to the diagrams below.

Why: Internal P&G testing determined that some product lots produced on this line have the potential for Salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made during this timeframe on this specific manufacturing line.

Threat Level: Medium. There have been no reports of pet or human illness associated with these products, yet Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

What Should I Do?:

  • Dispose of any unused portion of the product and feed your pet an alternate food. Keep on the lookout for signs of Salmonella.

  • If your PetCareRx purchase was affected, please call Eukanuba at 800-423-6036  or Iams at 800-675-3849 for information on refunds.

  • You can also contact P&G toll-free at 800-208-0172 (Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM ET) with any questions or concerns.

Alternatives: If your pet eats another type of food in addition to one mentioned above, feed your pet the other food only. If you need to switch your pet to a new food, consider one of these options.

Wellness Super5Mix Just for Puppy

Canidae All Life Stages Formula Dry Dog Food

Solid Gold Indigo Moon Dry Cat Food

Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Venison and Salmon Dry Cat Food

Since switching a pet’s food quickly (instead of mixing foods over a period of a few days) can cause stomach distress, talk to your vet if your pet experiences digestive issues.
