Grocery Store Dog Food vs. Premium Dog Food

On one of my last posts, I did go into detail about the price of raw versus premium brand dog food and this post is a little bit different. I know that talking about dog food is one of those things that I never really do, but since I now work at Petsmart, I spend most of my day referring people back and forth when it comes to dog foods.

Grocery Store Dog Brands are brands like:

Purina
Iams
Science Diet
Eukanuba
Authority (Petsmart brand)

The thing about grocery store brands is that they’re cheap. If cheap is what you want then go for it, but have you ever stopped to notice that each of these brands (except Authority) has about twenty different types of the same thing such as Purina beneful, healthy life, Pro plan, dog chow just to name a couple. What’s the difference between all these? Nothing but the bag. I won’t deny that Pro Plan isn’t a bad dog food but at the same time, it’s not necessarily a good one either. It is most definitely the best of the grocery store brands. Also, the reason that these dog foods are so cheap is because by products are used. If you don’t want to believe my statement on that, that’s fine, but look at the package and see what the first few ingredients are. If you really think the first few ingredients are meat, you’re in for a big surprise – because it’s not.

Premium Dog Brands are brands like:

Wellness
Blue Buffalo
                                   Taste of the Wild
                                   Nutro Max

These dog foods tend to have high protein and aren’t actually that great for puppies or sick dogs. They have more specific formulas for various things like digestive problems, sensitive skin and coat, and life stages that really cater to the age of the animal. They come at a more expensive price but the more expensive price is well worth it.
