Pet Foods Sold By Veterinarians May Not Be the Best But Part of the Worst

We would rather not speak negatively about any particular product or products unless to not do so would really be a disservice. You remember what your mother said:  “if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all”.

Over time we have received comments like “I feed (XYZ) that I get at the vet”. The implication being those brands and others sold by veterinarians are premium, top-of-the-line foods. You know some of them by name — Royal Canin, Purina Veterinary and Science Diet to name just a few. Well, not everything is as you would assume.

You Probably Aren’t Getting the Quality You Think You Are

If you need the help and convenience of commercial pet foods, become well versed in the art of decoding dog and/or cat food ingredient labels so you know that the nutritional value matches and hopefully surpasses the marketing hype employed.

These so-called “premium” pet foods contain cheap, low quality, less digestible protein of poor quality and ingredients that are no different than you’ll find in the discount brands at your grocery store!  Ingredients such as chicken by-product meal. What is chicken by-product meal you might ask? It consists of the leftovers in meat processing that are unfit for humans to consume including head, necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, intestines, and anything else that is part of the chicken EXCEPT clean meat. Couple that with the fact that many of these manufacturers give you a large amount of their protein from grain or grain by-product which includes corn gluten meal and brewer’s rice.

Meat should be listed first before any grains in a pet food. Grains should be whole or whole ground as in rice, oats, barley, millet, etc. Wheat and corn are common allergens and are mostly avoided in what is considered quality natural pet foods.

The high grain content of many pet foods for both dogs and cats is one of the main contributors to the growing obesity problem and increase in allergies in our pets, as most pets do not do well on high-carbohydrate foods.

Despite thousands of years of evolution and domestication, the digestive system of our four-legged companions has remained the same. Dogs and cats are designed by nature to eat protein from meat sources, not grain.

It’s one thing to give a dog or cat a pet food that will allow it to grow and stay alive. However, like with humans, it’s quite another to find the perfect balance to improve immune function, cognition, behavior and prevent cancer. You want organic, you want natural, you want the best natural food for your pet

If you’re still buying commercial dog food, you probably aren’t feeding your dog what it needs and deserves unless it’s equal to one of the recommended brands.
