Pet Food Recalls

Pet Food Recalls

August 26, 2013

2007-pet-food-recallPet food recalls seem to be increasing in frequency. Makes you wonder about what you are feeding our companion animals, doesn’t it? Last week, another pet food recall was announced. Some Eukanuba and Iams cat & dog foods were recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.

The American Veterinary Medical Association website lists pet food recalls by brands, weights and lot numbers. Please visit the site and check for yourself which products to avoid.  www.avma.org/news/issues/recalls-alerts  The FDA also does some monitoring of pet foods in the USA. fda.gov/cvm/petfoods.htm

Many people concerned about their pet’s nutrition (and safety) cook or mix their own homemade food for their pets.  There is even a magazine, “The Whole Dog Journal”, devoted to this practice.

“Raw food” diets have become very popular in the last few years. The “BARF” diet (Bones And Raw Food) was one of the first to emerge – providing detailed instructions on how to mix raw ingredients to improve pet nutrition and health.  To cater to consumer’s demands, several pet food manufacturers now offer frozen or refrigerated raw food. They can be found at the grocery store, pet food stores, or online shipped directly to your home.  Two of the larger companies are in the Seattle area!
